Baseball International Fan: Test...Equipment news for the National League starting in the 1877 season. The catchers mask was first worn during the 1877 season. Al Spalding, losing his pitching prowess, began wearing a glove on his catching hand when he played first base. In 1878 the major leagues began the use of turnstiles to figure the attendance at the ball parks. |
