Brooks Robinson Makes My Day Again

by Roberta Judd Thornton
(Pocomoke City, MD)

Years Later, I was a grown woman with a little girl of my own.

I took my little Christie to Crisfield to get the autograph of my hero Brooks Robinson. Of course I told her of my earlier meeting with him, and we were both excited to see him.

After we stood in line patiently waiting for Brooks to sign her baseball, my little girl looked seriously at Oriole # 5, and told him the story of how he had met her Mommy that day many years ago. Christie asked him if he remembered me. I smiled, as Brooks looked up at me and asked her if I was her Mommy, when she told him yes, he smiled at me with those big blue eyes of his, and told her "Of course I remember meeting your Mommy."

Now, we all know that Brooks didn't really remember meeting that 10 year old little girl who was now standing before him as the Mommy to this little girl, but in that moment, he made my little girl so happy, that he made me feel special all over again.

That is a true role model for our young baseball players.
