Meeting Brooks Robinson

by Roberta Judd Thornton
(Pocomoke City, MD)

When I was a young girl, my Dad was in management at a store in Annapolis, Maryland. The shopping Center always invited one of the Orioles to sign autographs on the Plaza.

I was in line waiting for my favorite Baltimore Oriole Brooks Robinson, when a girl came out of the store, and told me that my Dad wanted me to come into the store to the snack bar.

Imagine my surprise to find my Dad, and his boss having coffee with my hero, Brooks Robinson. Oh, the innocence of youth, I sat right down beside him, and drank a Coca Cola. We talked about baseball, and his son.

In subsuquent years, I met Boog Powell, and Jim Palmer, but nothing ever topped having a "coffee break" with Brooks Robinson.
