The Baseball

Using The Right and Proper English
Little White Baseball Can Talk

When Roughed Up and Dirty Can Hide
In The Tall Weeds And The Honeysuckle Vines

The Baseball is the most abused piece of sports equipment, aside from a hockey puck, during the course of its life as it changes its color from the shinny white to dull brown before it gives up the ghost and turns to dust.

How in the world is a baseball made? With a pill for a center and then all wrapped in yarn then being stitched like a tom cat coming home after an all night fight.

The, hard as my head, baseball is covered in white full grained cowhide with bright double red stiching and is really a fashion statement before it gets rubbed with mud and is hit so severely with aluminum or wood bats. It take a fierce pounding right on the nose and is knocked into the dirt of the infield or scampers pell mell or hell bent for leather across the green grass of the outfields.

What is this thing we call a baseball and how is it recognized almost like a cult following all around the World showing itself before millions of people each baseball season. It gets national headlines in the morning and evening papers through out the country because of the super hitting ,pitching or fielding performance skills of our legendary heroes of the diamonds.

"ONE THING FOR SURE I'VE BEEN KNOCKED AROUND BY SOME OF THE BEST HITTERS TO HAVE EVER SUITED UP AND PLAYED MY GAME. TO BE A NAME DROPPER HOW ABOUT THE LIKES OF-- BARRY,HAMMERIN HANK,THE BABE, THE SPLENDID SPLINTER,JOLTIN JOE, THE MICK,THE FLYING DUTCHMAN,THE GEORGIA PEACH,YOGI,AND EVEN LITTLE WEE WILLIE."

"NOW TO BE TRUTHFUL I CONSIDER IT A REAL HONOR THAT I AM LOVED BY SO MANY AROUND THE WORLD. MATTER OF FACT I AM TICKLED PINK AND I HAVE A SECRET."

Everybody around my game of baseball loves to quote statistics and measurements if one knows the dimensions the conclusion of a fine looking work is apparent.

The Baseball is officially:

  • Weight 5-5.25 ounces. It shall not weigh less than 5 ounces nor more than 5.25 ounces.

  • Diameter 2 7/8-3 inches

  • Circumference 9 inches

  • Center or nucleus is cork and rubber the center of the baseball is call the "pill" the cork is wrapped with two thin layers of rubber

  • The Pill is wrapped with 121 yards of machine wound four-ply blue-gray wool yarn.

  • Cover is 1-2 millimeters thick horsehide or cowhide since 1974 all official baseballs have been covered with cowhide. The cover is two pieces of figure eight full grain alum tanned white leather.

  • Stitching is 5-ply waxed red colored cotton thread 108 single stitches or 216 double stitches joins the two figure eight shaped cowhide leather pieces of cover. This stitching is referred to as the "Seams" of the baseball.

  • MLB requires the home team to have a minimum of 90 new baseballs on hand to start a game. Generally 60 to 70 new balls are used per game.

  • Normally with no known precise accounting a baseball put into play will stay in the game of a low of about 7 pitches to a high of approximately 3 innings.

All Major League Baseball teams are required to take the shiny slick surface from the new baseballs by rubbing them with a special mud.

The rubbing with this slighly gritted mud takes some of the luster off of the shiny new ball and roughs the leather slightly giving a pitcher a more secure grip of the ball. The genesis of the special mud ruling was in the name of safety.

The significantly slick ball was subject to slipping away from the pitcher and this constant loss of control was a danger for the baseball hitters.

Another factor was the habitual use of pitcher roughing balls up with dirt and even tobacco juice. Rules were sanctioned to stop the use by pitchers from doctoring or defacing the balls and by the old saying the mother of inventions is demand.

There was a demand for some substance or process to cure up the new ball for better safety in controlling pithes and sanitation to rid the tabacco spitting doctoring of the ball.

A gentleman by the name of Blackburne quite by chance found that some river bottom mud flats in Delaware was an ideal substance for mud rubbing of the baseballs. therefore we today have rubbing mud for curing the new baseballs for use in major league Baseball.

Today the Delaware baseball mud is required throughout the professional major leagues as The Baseball rubbing mud.
